Captain’s Log 4 June 2010 – Primordial Scream

Wavy Uganda-Nairobi Road. We saw four serious accidents on this trip alone.

I don’t think I have ever heard Cher scream before.  Not in over 39 years of hanging out together.  You would think we were used to close calls after driving the road to Nairobi for years.  We had already seen 4 road accidents from flipped fuel trucks to a bicycle being run down to a small sedan car going through a rare guard rail and over the bank.  Lights were still on but the police had just showed up when we passed.

We had just passed a very wavy bit of road and now it was more potholed with a potentially destructive drop off on the side of the tar of about 1 or 2 feet.  The driver of the large oncoming lorry who, from his high vantage point, could obviously see that his section of road ahead was not as good as ours decided to use ours instead.  There was no place for us to go before he had passed the pothole.  I slowed and pulled over as much as I could.  The driver passed us by no more that a few inches at 70 kph!  Cher screamed.  Lu said, “Oh, my goodness”, or something more… expressive.   I was stunned to think that it had been totally fine with that person for us to have an accident for the sake of his convenience.  But, as I said, it is the norm for this road.

I have practically passed on this same amalgamated road before may be a couple of times. But it was on my very first journey to Kenya in 2006, took a night bus, and on this same road we had a flat tire. Thank God we were on may be 20/40kmh, at around 3/4 am. We spent more than an hour fixing the tire.

Wow, so my advice to you to take that road was not so good after all? I knew about those ruts, but it was not such a long part of the road that was that bad, right? On the other hand, the Busia road might have thrown other nasty surprises at you…
